Why Ambitious Science Teaching Strengthens Science Education
Strong science education begins when students are invited to think, question, and explain like scientists. The instructional approaches used in my Life in the Everglades curriculum, the Everglades Learning Lab, reflects the research-based practices of Ambitious Science Teaching and supports students in becoming active participants in their own learning.
Ambitious Science Teaching encourages classrooms where students investigate meaningful natural phenomena, share their ideas, revise their thinking, and explain their conclusions using evidence. Instead of starting with vocabulary or textbook definitions, instruction begins with observations and questions about the real world. This approach increases engagement and helps students build lasting understanding because they are working to make sense of something that genuinely interests them.
Elementary science education is especially powerful when students study the Everglades because the ecosystem provides authentic examples of how plants, animals, water, and weather interact. When students examine questions such as why mangroves protect shorelines or how animals depend on wetland habitats, they begin to see science as a way to explain the environment around them rather than as a subject to memorize.
Another important feature of Ambitious Science Teaching is that instruction builds on students’ own ideas. Students draw models, share explanations, compare thinking with classmates, and revise their understanding as they gather evidence. This process strengthens confidence and helps teachers respond to what students actually think instead of what a lesson assumes they know.
Students are also supported in writing and discussing evidence-based explanations using the Claim–Evidence–Reasoning structure. This practice helps them connect observations to scientific ideas and strengthens both scientific thinking and academic language at the same time.
My book, Life in the Everglades, and the Everglades Learning Lab curriculum that I wrote to accompany it, reflects the principles of Ambitious Science Teaching. By placing students at the center of investigations, discussions, and explanations, they become strong scientific thinkers—and confident learners!
